Since 1917, local Lions Clubs have offered people
just like you the opportunity to give something back to their community.
Today, with over 1.4 million men and women in more than 180 countries,
Lions have expanded their focus to help meet the ever increasing needs of
our society.
As a member of the Oshkosh Lakeshore Lions club we become more aware of
the needs of our community and have the advantage to effectively make a
difference. Our club provides volunteers with project management
assistance, leadership training, personal development opportunities, and
organized fundraising programs. Being a Lion empowers us to help others in
a way that no one person could do alone.
Now more than ever, people with vision problems, the environment, our
senior community, our youth and the disadvantaged around the world need
your help. Each of us can make a difference!
The Oshkosh Lakeshore Lions Club is a service club that takes the Lions
motto “WE SERVE” very seriously. Our members are dedicated and serve many
hours to help raise money for a variety of causes. Some of our fund
raisers include Rose Day Sales (selling and delivering flowers in the
spring), conducting Avon fundraisers, selling Entertainment Books, selling
Lions Raffle Tickets, holding a “Maze Craze” at Halloween time, and brat
fries during the summer. Our members not only work to raise money but
continue to serve by personally aiding someone in need of assistance. We
also help educate the community about blindness, diabetes and the hearing
impaired. Our volunteers provide free vision screening to help detect
visions disorders that can easily be corrected with early diagnosis.
We continually collect eye glasses and hearing aids for recycling to
donate to those who cannot afford these simple aids for a better quality
of life.
100% of the money the Oshkosh Lakeshore Lions Club raises is donated to a
wide variety of worthy causes such as Lions Camp (a free camp for children
and adults with special needs).
On a local basis, our Club, has contributed
monetarily to:

These activities all relate to our Motto “WE SERVE”
Locally Lions International provided $10,000 of aid with an additional
$12,000 donated by local Lions Clubs after the flood of 1997.
An organization cannot function well without time for fellowship and
relaxation. Fellowship is an integral and highly valued part of our Club.
From the Tail Twister getting the fun started at our meetings, Christmas
parties and Spouse nights, our club, although a service club, makes time
for fun. We also expand our fellowship to other Lions Clubs as well. One
example is our annual meetings with the Omro Lions Club.

Lions
The primary aim of
Lionism is service to the Club's community.
For nearly 90 years, whenever there is a need at home
or around the world, Lions members are there to help—our motto is We
Serve. There are nearly 1.35 million Lions members in 197
countries and geographic areas who answer the needs that challenge the
communities of the world. Lions tackle tough problems like blindness, drug
abuse prevention and diabetes awareness.
Global neighbors
- Lions members—men and women—provide immediate and sustained relief in time of
disaster and offer long-term assistance to those in need. Lions collect and
recycle eyeglasses for distribution in developing countries and treat millions
of people to prevent river blindness.
Community Leaders
– The Oshkosh Lakeshore Lions improve the quality of life in their
local communities by doing diabetes testing and eye screenings, supporting eye
transplant programs, seeing eye dog programs and camps for disabled and
diabetic children and adults. We also assist in the Wisconsin Special
Olympics program held in Oshkosh every year.
What Is
Lionism?
Each year, Lions Clubs perform service
and provide goods to thousands of persons throughout the world. Lions are proud
of the fact that they perform more activities and help more people than any
other service organization in the world today.
Lions are members of a service-oriented
international group of clubs where members enjoy fellowship, develop leadership
capacity, and dedicate part of their free time to help those in need in their
own community, and (through the Lions Clubs International Foundation)
throughout the world.
Lions Clubs are non-political,
non-sectarian service organizations composed of men and women from all walks of
life. The purpose of a Lions Club is to recognize community needs and develop
means of meeting them, either through its own efforts, or in cooperation with
other agencies and community service organizations
History Of The Lions
The International Association of Lions Clubs was born at a meeting in Chicago,
Illinois on June 7, 1917. Melvin Jones, a young insurance executive, invited
members of 25 Chicago-area businessmen's clubs to meet and discuss the
possibility of joining together to serve the community. From that meeting a
call for the Associations first national (and later international) convention.
This convention was held October 8-10, 1919 in Dallas, Texas with 23 clubs from
across the United States participating.
In 1925, Helen
Keller challenged the Lions to become
"Knights of the Blind"
in the crusade against darkness." Since that time, Lions have added major
service projects for hearing and speech actions and work with the deaf;
diabetes awareness; drug awareness; environmental services; and, youth
activities through their Leo Clubs and the Lions Quest Skills For Adolescence
program.
